Jemal Countess |
The
artful use of dramatic exposure techniques, a keen eye for color and an
innate ability to capture the most passionate images are just some of
the reasons the dynamic photography of Jemal Countess
is earning a devoted following among those who know. From his outlaw graffiti
days (under the tag SEEK), to his time as an Associated Press stringer
and residency at legendary Sound Factory Bar event Underground Network.
Jemal has always brought an edgy beauty to his photo documents of urban life both day and night. Also widely published, his studio shots of super Producer/DJs Little Louie Vega and François K have graced the covers of Party News, Revolution and Groove magazines, while more of his work has been featured on innovative club posters (Limited edition Underground Network Posters of 1998) and in editorial essays for Shade, Remix and Woofin’ (both from Japan). In 2000, he shot the groundbreaking Club Shelter 12-month calendar - where actual club dancers were featured in their most beautiful positions. The King Street: Mix the Vibe Series wouldn’t be the same without the celebrated covers he created for Joe Claussell, DJ Pierre and Ron Trent nor would the very first Body & Soul Compilation in 1998. As one of the cities most-underrated DJs, he’s been a guest at noted big rooms like Club Shelter and Body & Soul, while holding down residencies at quirky lounges Avenue A Sushi, Orchard Bar and Aubette. Still, that hasn’t stopped him from having mix fans in far-flung places thanks to his popular mixed tapes series which has been servicing a global contingent of dance devotees since 1991. As a featured photographer and resident DJ of UndagroundArchves.com, fans can catch more of his exclusive portfolios and sample his mix sessions from anywhere in the world. |
